KALINGA HERITAGE PRESERVATION TRUST
About the Project
The world today is embroiled in greed, distrust and hatred. Better understanding is necessary between man to man, community to community and country to country for the very survival of mankind. The 13 th century Sun Temple of Konark contained the seed of that Catholicity. It presented a workable path to rebuild trust and better understanding – sit together and discuss.
Sun is universally revered because his benevolence brooks no barrier of religion, caste, creed colour or nationality. This Sun temple will provide a common platform for people around the Globe to meet and exchange thought.
This will be a Hindu temple. Our aim is not to part from the basic tenants of Vedic scriptures; the central philosophy of which is, ‘Vasudhayva Kutumbakam’ – global brotherhood.
This will be a modern temple integrating there in the archaeological and theosophical essence of Konark. We are not shivering the bond from the past but presenting a great heritage in conformity with contemporary social mores.
Apart from the main stream religion this temple will engage in social reform; some of which are presented below.
1. A Gurukul Ashram school injecting in young mind morals to last lifelong. Contemporary
education will not be neglected.
2. Dowry less simple marriage and obsequies in Vedic ways.
3. Counselling couples, suffering stormy relationship.
4. Yoga centre.
5. Cheap treatment, the traditional way; including Ayurveda and many other streams.
6. Centre for preservation of traditional art and craft.
7. A food court. It will be a modern version of Anandabazar of the 12 th century Jagannath temple where people eat; cutting across caste bar.
8. Tree plantation around the campus.
9. Developing solar energy from every roof top in the campus.
10. Volunteering in national calamities.
11. Volunteering in national calamities.
12. More socially beneficial activities, as the institution grows.
The central architectural concept comes from the scripture:
एकचक्रो रथो यस्य दिव्यः कनकभुषितः ।
स मे भवतु सुप्रितः पद्महस्तो दिवाकरः ॥
The Sun orbits the universe on a chariot having one wheel.
A 250 feet towering temple will be mounted on a saucer like round plinth; seemingly air born. The tower will have several floors inside connected by lifts and staircase. In the traditional temples, chambers also exist above the sanctum which are called Muda. But those are generally inaccessible. We will use the floors for various theosophical activities.
We will also fix wheels on the border of the plinth but there will be 12 wheels instead of 24. The 12 wheels symbolise 12 benevolent faces of Sun as described in the scripture Dwadasa Surya. The border of the plinth will be a Triangi Bada presenting in bas-relief, many activities and stories from epics implying progress – a reminder of another Vedic philosophy.
Charaiveti, Charaiveti; go ahead, do not stop, know thyself, purify and merge in the omnipotent.
The exterior of the temple complex will be covered with murals presented on Red Sand stone, Basalt, Marble, crystal and glass glazing. The project area we planned for, is 50 acres but we will first acquire 10 or 20 acres, start the core activities and expand progressively. The interior will also be decorated with a whif of modernity but aiming at creating an environment and calmness and peace.
The project cost now is Rs.400 crores. It will be completed in 4 to 5 years. We will keep the donors and the public, apprised of progress after every annual audit.
The gates of the Temple will be open to every human being under the Sun without prejudice to religion, caste, colour or nationality.
